Watching musical plays is fun, whether you have an idea of the play or not. Usually weekday performances have more seats available and the prices are usually substantially cheaper, so if you can go during the week, its a smart idea!! If you haven’t seen Wicked yet and you live in the Tempe area, you have to see it. We took our whole family to see Wicked 2 years ago during Thanksgiving break. My youngest son who was then 13 complained about going to Wicked beforehand, but during the performance he sat quietly and enjoyed every moment of it. Wicked the Musical is a theatrical show based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” and it is directed by Joe Mantello. The show was first launched in 2003 at the Gershwin Theatre in San Francisco and since then it has been performed 3,183 times (as of mid-summer 2011) around the world making it the 16th longest running show in theater history. It won 3 Tony awards in 2004. Wicked is a story of two witches Elphaba and Glinda with the former being a wicked evil witch of the west and Glinda—the good witch of the North– subverts her evil causes. Elphaba as a villain was being understood while in reality her evil acts were a mere reaction to the corrupt government of Wizards. Wicked quickly gained popularity and formed new box office records in US, Canada and the United Kingdom after which it made successful tours to Australia and Germany as well and did a business of $155 million in the first two years of its launch. As of 2010, Wicked has been watched by 5 million people around the world. By 2007 Wicked made 1000 performances in America setting a new record of the highest gross sales of a Broadway show.
Stephen Schwartz who is the lyricist of Wicked first decided to adapt the Gregory’s novel Wicked for a theatrical performance in 1995 and contacted the writer for the rights. Before the actual performance the novel plot had to be modified for a script. Schwartz contacted Winnie Holzman to simplify the story. Novel writer Maguire suggested that the story be told by the villain to make the whole plot more appealing. Schwartz mainly focused on the camaraderie of Elphaba and Glinda who despite their close friendship ended up in entirely different situations because of their dissimilar choices. He also made some major changes in the script to make it easily understandable by the audience. Schwartz selected Kristin Chenoweth for the role of Glinda and started practicing the show in 2000. Idina Menzel was casted as Elphaba in 2001. Director Joe Mantello joined the team in 2003 and casted the rest of the actors so that the final show could be presented to the public. The main essence of Wicked is the musical performances that attracted huge masses of theater goers.
Due to the surging popularity of the show, the team decided to launch it in UK. It was the first international performance by the Wicked cast and it later won the Whatsonstage Award for Best West End Show in 2009 and the Olivier Audience Award in 2010. Apollo Victoria Theatre was full of spectators on September 27, 2006 when the first official performance was made for the UK audience. The producer slightly modified the play according to the UK culture. After the successful UK tour, Wicked made another national trip in 2009 followed by an international trip to Germany in 2010 where they performed at the Metronom Theater. Many cast replacements were made for various tours that slightly changed the quality of performance. Quite recently Wicked made a tour to Australia on January 25, 2011 through April. The show would continue at Burswoods Theatre till August this year. The upcoming trips of Wicked include performances in New Zealand and Asia.
Schwartz meticulously worked on the music of Wicked to amplify the emotions and add a sensational feeling in accordance with the performance of actors. The major musical theme was adapted from “The survival of St. Joan” which was being modified later according to script of the show. Schwartz as a music director created different symphonies for various situations based on the same theme; made it romantic or scary by using different instruments.
